School Based Services

What Are School Based Services?

School based counselors help students that are struggling socially or academically and their families. They also serve as consultants to the staff on more successful interventions that not only can deescalate a situation but also build trust at the same time.

How Does It Work?

Masters-level licensed counselors engage youth participation in the program through developing trusting relationships with the individual and families served. The counselors assist the students by:

  • completing mental health assessments
  • meeting with families to identify potential barriers
  • helping students and families understand what has happened to them
  • developing support around the student and their family
  • bridging families to resources within the community.

These counselors also help staff with students that are frequently disruptive in a class setting due to trauma and approach these students differently to reduce the behaviors and not exacerbate them using punitive and authoritative power based methods.

Which School Districts Have This Service?

Currently we have counselors in:

  • Geneva CSD
  • Lyons CSD
